Most gyms throw you into a group class on day one. We do not. The Beginners Programme gives you three weeks of personal coaching before you join the main group, so by the time you are in a class, you know the movements, you know the people, and you know you belong.

Each week has a specific purpose. Each session is 1 to 1 or small group. Each workout is built entirely around where you are right now.

Common concern
I am too old to start this.

The Beginners Programme has been completed by members in their 50s and 60s with no prior fitness background. CrossFit 1864 also runs a dedicated programme, LIFE (Live Independently, Feel Energised), for members aged 50+, built around the kind of strength that makes everyday life better. Age is not a disqualifier here. If anything, it is a reason to start sooner.

I will embarrass myself in front of everyone.

The first three weeks are personal coaching, not group classes. By the time you join the group, you will know the movements, you will know the coaches, and you will know a few faces. You are not walking into a room of strangers mid-workout. The community here has been built deliberately to be welcoming. The most experienced members are the ones who encourage beginners most.

I have tried to get fit before and it has not worked.

Most people who have failed at fitness programmes did not fail because of a lack of willpower, they failed because the environment was not structured to support them. The Beginners Programme gives you a coach, a community that notices when you are absent, and a plan you did not have to write yourself. The structure is the thing that makes the difference. CrossFit looks way too intense for me.

What you have seen online is elite competition. It is not a CrossFit class. Intensity is self-selected, you work at a level that is appropriately challenging for you. The coaches scale every movement. The first three weeks of the Beginners Programme are deliberately low-intensity: the goal is to build technique and familiarity, not to see how far you can push. Most first-timers are surprised by how manageable it actually is.

CrossFit 1864 has been running in Poplar for 10 years. The community includes professionals, parents, people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, people who came in with the same thought you have right now and are now among the most committed members in the gym. Classes run at 6am, 12:30pm, and 5:30pm Monday to Friday, before work, at lunch, and after work. The gym is 15 minutes from Canary Wharf, 5 minutes from Blackwall DLR. Each class is 60 minutes. The personal training sessions in the Beginners Programme are scheduled around your availability. If you can make a 60-minute window three times a week, you can do this.

The foundations are built here. Squat, hinge, press, pull, taught properly, with time, with a coach whose whole attention is on you. You will also attend your first group classes in week two.

You Are Part of the Community
