Fitness that works
in real life.

Functional fitness is strength, conditioning, and movement that makes you better at everything outside the gym — not just in it. This is what we coach at CrossFit 1864, every session.

Training that transfers
to real life.

Functional fitness means training movements, not muscles. Instead of isolating a bicep or a quad on a machine, you practice how the body actually moves — squatting, lifting, carrying, pressing, pulling, and moving under load.

The result isn't just a better-looking body (though that tends to happen too). It's a stronger, more resilient one. You can carry your shopping without back pain. You can keep up with your kids. You can move confidently for decades.

At CrossFit 1864, every session is built around functional movement patterns — coached from the ground up, scaled to your level, and always working towards something that matters beyond the gym floor.

Movements, Not Muscles

Train how your body actually works — not in isolation on a machine.

Strength That Transfers

Get stronger at things that actually matter — carrying, lifting, moving.

Longevity, Not Damage

Properly coached functional fitness builds a body that works for decades.

Expert Coaching

Every session coached, every movement taught correctly from day one.

Everything we do
comes back to these.

Six fundamental patterns of human movement. Coach them well, load them progressively, and you build fitness that lasts.

Squat

Sit down, stand up, pick things up. The squat is the foundation of all lower-body strength and the most natural human movement.

Real life: stairs, children, every chair you use

Hinge

The hip hinge — the deadlift family — is how you should be lifting anything off the floor. Most back problems come from not knowing this movement.

Real life: lifting bags, bending without injury

Press

Overhead and horizontal pressing builds shoulder strength and stability. It teaches your body to create force from the ground up.

Real life: reaching up, pushing doors, posture

Pull

Rows, pull-ups, and pulling patterns build the posterior chain and balance out all the sitting and pushing that modern life demands.

Real life: posture, shoulder health, carrying

Carry

Loaded carries — farmers carries, suitcase carries — are the most underrated functional movements in existence. Grip, core, everything.

Real life: shopping, luggage, everyday load

Locomotion

Running, rowing, cycling, jumping — building your engine. Conditioning that supports the strength work and makes everything else feel easier.

Real life: energy, stamina, cardiovascular health

Coaching is what
makes it work.

01

Technique First

Every movement is taught with mechanics before load. You learn the pattern correctly before we add weight — which is how injuries are avoided and real strength is built.

02

Scaled to You

Classes cap at 10. Your coach knows your limitations, your history, and your goals. Every workout is adjusted to your level — not a generic modification, a personal one.

03

Progressive Overload

Programming is structured to build over time. You don't just repeat the same workouts — you progress systematically towards more capacity, more strength, more resilience.

04

Long-Term Thinking

We programme for people who want to be fit and healthy at 60, not just look good for summer. Intensity is earned, recovery is respected, and longevity is the goal.

Functional fitness is for
all of these people.

What people ask
before starting.

CrossFit is a specific methodology built on functional fitness principles. At CrossFit 1864, we use CrossFit programming — which means varied functional movements at appropriate intensity, coached every session. Functional fitness is the umbrella; CrossFit is one of its best expressions.

No experience needed at all. Our Beginners Programme is specifically designed for people starting from scratch — three personal training sessions that teach you the fundamental movements before you join group classes. You'll never be thrown in at the deep end.

Functional fitness is extremely safe when coached properly — and coaching is exactly what we do. Every movement is scaled to your level. Technique always comes before load. Our coaches prioritise injury prevention over intensity, every single session.

A bootcamp gives you a sweaty hour and sends you home. Functional fitness at CrossFit 1864 is structured, progressive, and coached. Every movement is purposeful. Every session builds on the last. The aim is long-term adaptation — not just burning calories today.

Most members notice improved strength, energy, posture, and confidence within the first 4–6 weeks. Body composition typically shifts over 3–6 months. But the results people value most — feeling capable, moving without pain, keeping up with life — show up much faster than that.

Classes run at 6am, 12:30pm, and 5:30pm Monday–Friday, plus weekend morning sessions. We're built around the schedules of people who work in Canary Wharf and East London — early mornings, lunchtime, and after work.
