Is CrossFit
for beginners?
If you're asking, you're probably not asking about workouts. You're asking if you'll fit in. Here's the honest answer.
The questions nobody says out loud.
Almost every beginner arrives with the same worries — even if they don't say them. These aren't fitness problems. They're trust problems. And trust doesn't come from motivation or willpower. It comes from structure, coaching, and clear expectations.
"Will I be out of place?"
"Will I get injured?"
"Will everyone else be fitter than me?"
"Will I know what I'm doing?"
"Will I be judged for being slow?"
"Will I embarrass myself?"
Every single person who trains at CrossFit 1864 started with at least one of those thoughts. The coaches did too. That hesitation is normal. And it's exactly why CrossFit, when done properly, works so well for beginners. CrossFit isn't one fixed workout done the same way by everyone. It's a framework. And at CrossFit 1864, that framework is built to meet you where you are.
The same structure.
Different levels.
CrossFit is often misunderstood as one fixed workout done the same way by everyone. That's not how it works. Every class follows the same structure — but what changes is how the workout is performed, not whether you belong in the room.
That structure is the same for every member — beginner or experienced. What changes is your scaling level. That's where the three options come in.
For beginners, people returning to fitness, or anyone prioritising movement quality first
Simpler movements. Manageable loads. The goal is to build strength, consistency, and confidence without feeling overwhelmed. Life is not "easy" — it's intentional. Every rep counts. Every session builds.
For members who've built their foundations and are training for long-term progress
Loads and skills are scaled intelligently so the workout stays challenging, effective, and sustainable. This level is where most members train day to day — and where you'll spend most of your time once you're through the Beginners Programme.
For experienced CrossFit athletes with more complex skills and heavier loads
RX is full prescription — the workout as written, no modifications. This is not where beginners start, and there's no pressure to get here. Many members train happily at Fitness level indefinitely. RX is a tool, not a destination.
Scaling is not doing less.
It's doing it right.
Scaling means you're getting a lesser workout. You're falling behind. You're not really doing CrossFit.
Scaling means you're doing the right workout for your current ability. Your body responds to effort, consistency, and progression — not to exercise names or weights on a bar.
They chase the advanced version too early — wrong technique, too heavy, too fast — and then wonder why they're hurt or plateauing.
A beginner performing a simpler movement well, at the right intensity, will get better results than someone grinding through advanced skills they're not ready for.
Everyone trains together.
That's the point.
At CrossFit 1864, beginners aren't separated into a different room or treated like a problem to manage. Everyone trains together. This matters more than people realise.
- Training side by side builds confidence faster than isolation
- It normalises effort — everyone is working hard at their own level
- It removes comparison — you're not behind, you're just at a different point
- Beginners see what's possible. Experienced members remember where they started.
"CrossFit isn't for people who are already fit. It's for people who want to start where they are, with a system that knows how to take them forward."
CrossFit 1864 coaching philosophyWhat your first class
actually looks like.
Your first class won't feel chaotic. Here's what you can count on from the moment you walk in.
You'll be coached
Movements are explained clearly before you do them. You won't be expected to know anything in advance.
Options will be given
Your coach will guide you toward the scaling level that makes sense for you today. Not the one you think you "should" be at.
You won't be rushed
Classes are capped at 10. Your coach has time for you. No one is moving so fast you can't keep up.
You won't be judged
Everyone in the room has been exactly where you are. The culture at 1864 is one of encouragement, not competition.
You'll just train
Not perfectly. Not impressively. Just honestly, at your level, with people who are glad you showed up.
You'll want to come back
That's the part most people don't expect. One session is usually enough to understand why people keep returning.
Built for real people
with real lives.
Many of our members live or work around Canary Wharf, Poplar, Blackwall, and East India. Busy professionals. Parents. People who haven't trained consistently in years.
They didn't start fit. They started curious — and a little unsure.
Our approach is designed for people with real schedules and real starting points, not fitness extremes. Three time slots a day — 6am, 12:30pm, and 5:30pm — mean there's a session that fits around your work, not the other way around.
If you're looking for beginner-friendly CrossFit in East London, this structure is what allows you to start confidently and build something that actually lasts.
Start where you are.
We'll take care of the rest.
