The barbell isn't
just for athletes.

If you're searching for strength training in Canary Wharf, you probably want to get stronger — and you want to do it without guessing, without injury, and without years of wasted effort in a commercial gym.

That's exactly what we do.

At CrossFit 1864 in Poplar — 15 minutes from Canary Wharf — you'll learn the lifts that build real strength, taught by qualified coaches in a small group setting capped at 10. No machines you don't need. No guesswork. No ego.

Why it matters

Strength is a skill.
It changes everything.

What strength training actually does.

Strength training isn't about looking a certain way. It's the most efficient, evidence-backed way to build the kind of body that holds up — at work, at home, on the football pitch, and well into your 50s, 60s, and beyond.

  • Builds bone density — protects against osteoporosis
  • Protects your back — strong glutes and posterior chain prevent the most common injuries
  • Boosts metabolism — muscle is the most metabolically active tissue you have
  • Improves longevity — strength predicts healthy aging better than almost any other marker
  • Builds confidence — there's nothing like adding 20kg to a lift you didn't think you could do

It's the closest thing to a fountain of youth that exists. And anyone can learn it.

The fundamentals

Four lifts.
Built on technique.

These four movements form the foundation of every strong body. Master them, and everything else gets easier.

01
The King of Lifts

The Squat

Sitting down, standing up, picking things up — it's all a squat. We teach the air squat, back squat, and front squat in stages so you build bulletproof legs and a solid core.

02
The Most Honest Lift

The Deadlift

The hip hinge is how you should be lifting anything off the floor. Most back problems come from not knowing this. Learn the deadlift properly — and your back will thank you for the next 40 years.

03
The Confidence Builder

The Press

Strict press, push press, push jerk. Overhead pressing builds shoulder strength, stability, and confidence in a way nothing else can. Solid shoulders = solid everything.

04
Power & Coordination

The Olympic Lifts

Once you've got the fundamentals, we layer in the snatch and clean & jerk. The most athletic, technical, and rewarding lifts in the gym — taught from the ground up.

Our approach

Technique first.
Always.

Coached. Capped. Personal.

Every strength training session at CrossFit 1864 is fully coached, in a class capped at 10 people. That's the closest you can get to private coaching — your coach knows your name, your goals, and exactly where to scale every lift for you.

  • Qualified coaches — every coach is CrossFit Level 1+ certified with years of barbell experience
  • Technique is non-negotiable — you'll lift heavier when you're ready, not before
  • Progressive programming — every session has a purpose, every block builds on the last
  • Scaled to you — same class, same coach, different load — exactly what fits your body and your level

You don't need to be strong to start. You start to get strong.

Your first month

From your first session
to your first PR.

Here's exactly what your first month of strength training at CrossFit 1864 looks like.

WK 1

Beginners Course — fundamentals

Three 1-to-1 sessions with a coach. You'll learn the squat, the hinge, and the press. By the end of the week, you've done your first real workout and you understand exactly what's happening in a class.

WK 2

Beginners Course — into the group

You join group classes alongside our members, scaled to your level. You're not "the new person" — you walk in knowing how to lift, how the class works, and what's coming next.

WK 3

Beginners Course — confidence

By the end of week three, you've completed your goal-setting session and finished the Beginners Course. You know your numbers. You know your scaling. You know your community.

WK 4

Membership — the work begins

Move into a regular membership and start training 2–4x per week. Strength blocks, conditioning, skill work — programmed by coaches, scaled to you. This is where the real progress starts.

Is this you?

Strength training
is for you if…

If any of these sound familiar, you're in the right place.

You work or live near Canary Wharf, Poplar, or the Isle of Dogs
You want to learn to lift — properly, with coaching
You're tired of wandering around a commercial gym with no plan
You value technique, structure, and not getting injured
You want to get strong — not just look like you train
Common questions

What people ask
before starting.

Absolutely. Most of our members started exactly where you are. Our Beginners Course is designed for people who've never touched a barbell — three personal training sessions to teach you the lifts before you ever step into a group class.

No. Building serious muscle takes years of dedicated training and very specific eating. What strength training will do is make you stronger, leaner, more athletic, and more confident in your body — not bulky.

Strength training matters more, not less, as you age. We coach members in their 20s through their 60s. It's never too late to start lifting properly — and the science is clear: strength training is one of the best things you can do for healthy aging.

Most gyms hand you a key fob and let you figure it out. We do the opposite. Every session is fully coached, in a class capped at 10. Your coach knows your name, your goals, and exactly where to scale every lift for you. Plus, you train alongside the same community every week.

For most people starting out, 2–3 sessions per week is plenty to build serious strength while still recovering well. Once you're conditioned, 3–5 sessions is a sweet spot for most members. Your coach will help you find the right frequency for your body and your goals.
